Electric vehicles are still considered to be niche products, but tendencies in global relevant markets clearly show that the breakthrough is almost here. Common electric vehicles use drive components based on high voltages (HV) up to 400 V to satisfy high standards in performance and comfort and some players on automotive market consider even 800 V the future power supply of cars. volabo challenges this state-of-the-art and presents a globally unique alternative: we deliver extreme performance up to more than 300 kW at safe-to-touch battery voltages.


volabo e-drives outclass the standard in efficiency, safety and ease of mass production. ISCAD reduces losses in common driving cycles by more than 50 % compared to reference drives based on induction machines. The system is based on a battery voltage of 48 V and hence, fundamentally eliminates the electrical hazard potential for passengers – even in heavy car crash situations. A high order of redundancy and excellent scalability characterize our concept and make ISCAD the number one choice for many applications.





The initial idea about ISCAD grew at the chair in Electrical Drives and Actuators at Universität der Bundeswehr München. Core of the innovative technology is the novel stator of the electric motor: volabo uses a massive stator cage instead of copper coils which are very complicated in manufacturing.


The stator cage made from solid bars and a short-circuit ring replaces wound copper coils.

Using ISCAD, a perfect utilization of the motor geometry can be achieved and furthermore, the production in high quantity is easier than for any other wound e-motor. The ideal solution for our future mobility.


Every single bar of the stator cage is supplied by a dedicated power electronics unit. The motor induces extra-low voltages due to the low number of turns per “coil” which makes it possible for ISCAD to use low cost MOSFETs instead of expensive HV IGBTs. ISCAD eliminates e-motor production complexity and makes the drive intelligent due to new possibilities in logic and control. Thanks to ISCAD Moore’s Law applies to electrical drives now.


Heavily increased degrees of freedom in electric motor supply are the basis for a revolution in drive control abilities. The shape of the motor magnetic field can be freely adjusted – smooth fading between different pole pair numbers can be considered as integration of an electromagnetic gearbox into the motor. Consequently, the maximum efficiency operating point can be extended to almost the entire torque-speed range. Depending on the driving situation the most suitable “gear” is shifted into. This makes ISCAD extremely efficient – especially at real driving cycles.


The number of magnetic poles inside the e-motor is adjusted to meet the current driving situation and maximize vehicle efficiency.

ISCAD has an enormous lead in drive efficiency compared to the state-of-the-art. Consequently, either the vehicle’s battery capacity can be significantly reduced or the driving range increased. ISCAD remarkably improves the key ratio driving range per expenses and successfully enables our individual mobility turnaround.


ISCAD shows further advantages in the overload area: in contrast to conventionally wound e-motors the maximum torque can be generated even beyond the peak power limit for a short time, because additional voltage is always reserved. ISCAD outpaces its competitors.


The extra-low voltage configuration of all ISCAD components makes the system inherently safe from an electrical point of view. Due to its principle, both plus and minus poles of the battery can be touched without any risk to the human body. Even in case of heavy accidents exposure to critical voltages is impossible – electrical safety is absolutely guaranteed.


Operation at voltages below 60 V also has advantages from a standardization perspective: expensive HV safety measures are not required and costs in development, production and the product itself are reduced. The vehicle maintenance can be done by motor mechanics in case of ISCAD – no special HV trainings are needed. The effort for fleet managers is substantially reduced and customers don’t need to care about the safety of their car.
